Rozelle is known historically has the location of Rozelle Hospital, which was founded in 1786. In the early days of the colony the mentally ill were incarcerated in gaols or convict hospitals as no distinction was made between deviancy and illness. As time progressed in the colony an attitudinal change occurred and there was a determined effort to provide decent conditions and treatment for the mentally ill. It was eventually this site on the shores of Sydney Harbour that became that.
Today, the suburb of Rozelle is known most for the Sydney College of Art, which is housed on the grounds of the old Rozelle Hospital in the Historic Kirkbride buildings.
